State Sports Climbing Meet held without state body

Sunil Kumar Dakua, Priyadarshini Ghatuari, Niharika Das and Bikash Bansal won the four titles in the 1st State Sports Climbing Championship, which was organised by Utkal Karate School at its own campus here on Sept 24 and 25, 2016.

Interestingly the inaugural edition of the state sports climbing meet took place without the presence of any official of the apex governing body of the sport in the state. According to media reports, a body named as Odisha Sports Climbing Association of Odisha was formed earlier this year with Biswajit Mohanty and Sushant Kumar Das as president and secretary.

Around 100 competitors joined the two-day state championship, which was inaugurated by State Sports & Youth Services Director Anant Kishore Jena. Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera handed over the prizes at the closing ceremony. With sports climbing set to be introduced in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic, enthusiasm was palpable in the state championship.
